FEBRUARY 2012
“IBC exists to
invite people into community with God and His people, equipping them to follow
and serve Christ.”
Pastor’s Message
PRAY!
Pray! To some I may be starting
to sound like a broken record. Still,
I’ll say it again—pray! Why? Because when we don’t pray we show ourselves
to be self-confident, self-sufficient, self-reliant, self-deceived,
self-centered people. When we don’t pray
we demonstrate that “in self do we trust.” The absence of serious prayer reveals our conviction that we can serve
Christ in our own strength and build His Church by our own cunning using
self-conceived methods and means. More
than a century ago, Charles Spurgeon wrote, “The minister who does not earnestly pray over his work must surely be a
vain and conceited man. He acts as if he
thought himself sufficient of himself, and therefore need not appeal to
God. Yet what a baseless pride to
conceive that our preaching can ever be in itself so powerful that it can
turn men from their sins, and bring them to God without the working of the Holy
Ghost.”
As it is with your pastor, so it is with our church. What baseless pride for us to conceive that
our ministries are so powerful that they can turn the lost to Christ without the
working of the Holy Spirit. And that’s
why we must cry out to God. That’s why
we must pray. Fervent prayer
demonstrates understanding and humility. Fervent prayer demonstrates an authentic dependence on God.
Do we want to please God? Do we
want to be useful to Him? Do we want to
be salt and light in our world? Do we
want to see the lost come to know Jesus and taste the goodness of His
salvation? We are each burdened for
certain friends, co-workers, and loved ones. We want to share the love of Christ with them. We want them to experience eternal life. Even so, we cannot make it happen. Left to ourselves we are not bold enough to
share like we should. We are not clever
enough to convince them of the truth of God’s word. More than that, even when our mouths are
open, their hearts are closed! They are
closed because no one understands; no one
seeks God (Romans 3:11) for the god
of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from
seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ…
(2 Corinthians 4:4).
Until we believe in the hopeless state of every unbeliever—and in our
own helplessness to change it—we will continue to deceive ourselves with the
absurd thought that implementing the right program, singing the right songs, or
sharing the right gospel outline can change eternal destinies. Only when we recognize things as they truly
are will we finally cry out to God and pray. In the end, only God can make us bold. Only God can open doors for us to share the truth effectively. And only God can open the hearts of those who
hear and enable them to believe! He
promises to do none of this apart from prayer.
Will you make time to join us every Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. in the
church office building for prayer meeting? Will you plan today to participate in our annual 36 hours of prayer the
week prior to Easter (April 2-6)? Every
day, Monday-Friday, we will be praying at the church from 6-10 a.m. and from
4-8 p.m. (except on Good Friday). Each
hour we will begin a new session of corporate prayer. We are asking each of you to make a
commitment to join us for one or two hours of prayer each day
of that week. We will specifically be
praying for lost friends and family-members by name.
Are we willing to be inconvenienced for the sake of the lost? Are we willing to humble ourselves? Are we willing to depend on God alone? Are we willing to pray?

“Taste and See”—Intermountain’s radio

DONATIONS BY CHECK
Our bank has begun to refuse checks
that have any changes made to them (even if those changes are initialed). Three checks were recently refused because
“2011” was changed to “2012”. If you
make a mistake when writing your offering check we ask that you write out a
completely new check. We are sorry for
this inconvenience. Thank you for
supporting the family and ministries of Intermountain.
BACKGROUND
CHECKS
For the protection of our children, all
volunteers (15+ years old) involved in ministry to children and youth need to
complete a background check. Go to www.intermountainbaptist.org , and fill out the form you’ll
find under the “Involvement at IBC” tab. You’ll need your Driver’s License and
Social Security numbers. It only takes about five minutes! As of February 1,
2012, you will not be allowed to participate in ministry involving minors
(younger than 18) until you have completed a background check. Thanks for your
cooperation.
NURSERY
MINISTRY
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!!! To serve young
families by working in the nursery. Please see Joan Manning (801-541-8662) to
sign up as a Sunday morning nursery worker. This is an incredibly important

families into the life of the church.

has already done some amazing things. The Club will resume weekly meetings on
Thursday, February 9. Please pray that God will bring many children and their
families to Christ! Pray also for our
Good News Club leaders, and ask God if this is a ministry He wants you to be
involved in. Contact Joan Manning

YOUTH LEADERSHIP TEAM’S NEW SUNDAY
SCHOOL PROGRAM
We are excited to announce that the
Youth Leadership Team (YLT) will be teaching the elementary Sunday school class
(excluding Kindergarten and pre-school) the first Sunday of each month,
beginning February 5. The reason for our doing this is twofold. First, we hope
to develop a stronger God-based relationship between our elementary aged
children and our youth. Second, God is clearly growing our youth, and we want
to seize upon this opportunity to train up our youth to lead a mission trip
Vacation Bible school program (or whatever mission field God has planned for
them)… and what better way to start toward this goal than by giving them the
opportunity to lead the younger children at Intermountain Baptist Church.
Please pray for our youth and their leaders as they step out of their comfort
zone and set out on this new adventure.
YOUTH
“SELFLESS SATURDAYS
"Selfless Saturdays” are hosted at
Intermountain Baptist Church from 5-8:30/9 p.m. on the third Saturday of every
month. It is a time for the youth group to come together to serve and
fellowship. As a group striving to be a selfless generation, we want to commit
this time to the LORD - putting Him and others first, and ourselves last. And
we want to grow stronger as a group - what better way to do that than to work
together on a Saturday afternoon! The main verse that we use for our Selfless
Saturdays/Youth Group is John 12:26 "Whoever serves me must follow me; and
where I am my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves
me."

HOURS OF PRAYER
The Intermountain family will again be
devoting itself to a week of focused prayer the week prior to Easter (April 2-6).
Corporate prayer meetings will be held hourly each morning from 6-10 a.m. and
each afternoon from 4-8 p.m. (no evening prayer on Good Friday). We will
specifically be praying for our Easter services and for lost loved ones,
co-workers, and friends. We are asking each member of the church family to join
us for at least one hour of corporate prayer each day of the week. Sign-up
sheets and prayer request cards will be available in March.
SUNDAY
MORNING PRAYER MEETING
Charles Spurgeon, one of the great preachers of the 19th century, wrote,
The minister who does not earnestly pray over his work must surely be a vain
and conceited man. He acts as if he thought
himself sufficient of himself, and therefore needed not to appeal to God. In
the same way, we believe the church that does not earnestly pray over its work
must surely be a vain and conceited church. By not praying together, we act as
if we think ourselves to be sufficient of ourselves and therefore need not
appeal to God.
Please join with us on Sunday
mornings at 8:30 a.m. in the church office building as we humble ourselves
before God in prayer. We need to always be asking God for His guidance, His
favor, and His work in our hearts—and the hearts of the unbelievers He calls us
to reach.
Intermountain has a prayer team that
wants to pray for you. Please use the
Registration Book. Members of our prayer team will receive your request no

about 30% of homes in Utah. According to Utah’s Div. of Radiation Control,
“Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk.” The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency urges the public to contact state radon
offices, visit www.epa.gov/radon
