Generation Selfless: IBC Youth Group

About Us!

We call ourselves "Generation Selfless". And why? 'Cause that is what we are striving to be- selfless for the LORD in this crooked and depraved generation (Phil. 2:15)! Our name was taken, in part, from Hillsong United's song Hosanna. In the song it says that there is a generation, "rising up to take its place with selfless faith…" That is what we wanna do! We want to rise up with a selfless faith! A faith not focused on "me, me, me" but on the I AM (Ex. 3:14). And more so, as the song continues, we want to do that by praying and seeking. We seek what the LORD wants of us by studying His infallible and inspired Word (2 Timothy 3:16) and talking to Him.

Our name was also inspired by 2 Cor. 5:15 "And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again." WOW! Gets me every time I read it… In light of Christ's awesome sacrifice on our behalf, what better "thank you" gift than to live a life devoted to Him! If you love Him, you'll obey His commands (1 John 5:3) and one of those things is living righteously!

So now you are in "the know" when it comes to our group name, but I hope that you understand that it is so much more than a title. Generation Selfless means action! It means that you live up to the name you claim! And if you don't know how to live like that or have questions, no worries, we are all learning! Like I said, we have to pray and seek in order to become a generation with selfless faith. That's what group is all about! We come together, play a few games, chit-chat and then head into study! And of course, we make sure to cover each Bible study in prayer.

We created a little mission statement that goes like this:

"It is our desire to learn more about the Word of God and the sacrifice that his Son, Jesus Christ, made for us; His call for us to be ambassadors in this fallen world; our role within the body of IBC; and to better reach out to the community around us."

Sound pretty serious? Good! 'Cause it is. J

Quick Notes…

The sum up: The Generation Selfless Youth Group is a great way to get to know other believers, learn how to study the Bible better and to pray corporately with other brothers and sisters in the faith.

When and where: Group meets every Thursday (excluding holidays and special breaks- listen up during the announcements!) in the church office building. We have an epic room that the LORD has blessed us with! You can't miss it…it looks like a shelf of paint buckets toppled over and had a party. J

Age range: Kiddos going into seventh through twelfth grade. We don't really go by age, just grade. Let me know if you have any questions!

What to bring: Well, you (obviously) and your Bible (let me know if you don't have and I will make sure that's no longer an issue!). And know that it is totally acceptable to bring friends! The more the merrier!!

What NOT to bring: Electronics (not much time for iPods, Kindles, Gameboys, etc. when we're fellowshipping and studying), weapons of any kind (real or fake), drugs or alcohol (I know, I know… just covering all the bases).

A typical night: Group generally looks like this…

·         Chill time and/or games

·         Announcements and prayer

·         Praise time (singing sweet, sweet melodies to the LORD!)

·         Bible study and additional prayer

·         Closing game (if there is time- that's a big "if" as sometimes the youth leader just won't stop talking… oh wait, that’s me…)

Random: If you have any questions, comments or prayer requests that you would like to write down instead of chat about, please do! There is a bulletin board outside the youth leader office with papers and a bag labeled "FOR MEL". Drop any notes off in there, and I will make sure to read them.
